Azalea is an ornamental flowering plant that has won the love of many flower growers for its incredible beauty. The advantage of azalea among other flowers is its flowering period, which occurs when most indoor plants are dormant (late autumn - winter). However, the azalea is quite picky about the content, and for its correct reproduction it is necessary to know certain rules.

How rhododendron reproduces: methods

There are 4 ways to reproduce azaleas at home, which differ from each other in the complexity of implementation, the likelihood of plant survival and the most convenient time of the year. Azalea breeding methods are usually divided into two large groups:

  • Seminal - the longest way, taking about 5 years. It is the germination of seeds taken from the mother bush.
  • Vegetative - this method allows you to get a new plant faster. With this method, a part of the plant is taken for the propagation of azaleas. There are several methods of vegetative propagation: cuttings, grafting, dividing the bush.

When is it ok and when is it not?

Reproduction for azaleas, when it comes to the vegetative method, as well as for other flowers, is stressful, so you need to take this issue as seriously as possible and carefully study the features so as not only to grow a new one, but also not to ruin the old plant.

The beginning of flowering of azaleas occurs in late autumn and continues throughout the winter. Any manipulation of the plant during this period can lead to the fall of the buds. It is imperative to wait until the end of flowering, after which you can already start dividing the bushes and cutting off the cuttings.

The optimal breeding time for azaleas is from April to August.

If you decide to propagate the azalea by cuttings, remember that the shoots can be cut only once a year, in the spring.

How to reproduce correctly: step by step

Each method of breeding azaleas has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages that you need to be aware of.

Dividing the bush

The simplest, but at the same time the most effective way of plant propagation is the highest degree of establishment of new plants.

The method is applicable only for adults when the age of the bush is more than 3 years old. The root system of the plant must be healthy and developed.

The process of reproduction of azaleas by dividing the bush is as follows:

  1. The pot is immersed in a container of water for 10-20 minutes so that the soil absorbs as much moisture as possible.
  2. The azalea is taken out of the pot along with a lump of earth, carefully cut into pieces with a sharp knife, trying not to damage the roots.
  3. Each part is planted in separate pots, filled with soil suitable for azaleas, and well moistened.
  4. For the purpose of survival and adaptation, the separated bushes are placed in a dark place for a week.

Azalea prefers acidic soils.

The grafting method is used when other methods cannot be applied, which is typical for varieties that grow slowly and root poorly.

Vaccination involves the transfer of an azalea cut to a plant 4-5 years old. The bush to which the cutting is grafted is called the stock; the stalk itself is a scion.

Vaccination includes the following steps:

  • The choice of a scion with a high rooting ability - the cutting should not be older than 5 years and have a length of about 15 cm.
  • The choice of the rootstock on which the grafting will be carried out is an adult plant with a high rooting ability, from which a stalk about 15 cm long is also taken.
  • The scion is separated from the mother bush by an oblique cut.
  • Make a similar cut on the rootstock.
  • Place the cuttings of the scion and rootstock to each other and wrap with polyethylene foil.
  • Plant the grafted stalk in a pot, cover with foil (read about the secrets and rules for planting rhododendron here).
  • To increase the likelihood of successful plant survival, it is necessary to provide high humidity - spray the bush daily for 10-14 days.

In addition to the methods listed, sometimes azalea is propagated by cuttings or using seeds.

Growing a plant from seeds is a very complex and lengthy process, most often it is used by breeders to develop new varieties.

The length of the rooting period is individual for each plant and depends on the following factors:

  • the age of the cutting;
  • humidity;
  • air temperature;
  • soil composition.

On average, the process takes 45 to 60 days.

For the successful rooting of an azalea stalk, the following conditions must be provided: the air temperature should be 25 degrees, and the optimum humidity should be 80%. A stable microclimate can be achieved by covering the plant with a glass jar or film. Azalea takes root well only in absolute darkness., therefore, the created mini-house should be covered with a dark cloth.

During the rooting period, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the mini-greenhouse and moisten the soil. A sign of successful rooting is the appearance of young leaves.

Problems and difficulties and their solutions

Azalea propagation is a laborious and rather complicated process., in which beginners often face the following difficulties:

  • Cuttings take root for a long time. There may be several reasons for this problem:
    1. Unsuitable temperature regime: at temperatures below 25 degrees, the cuttings will not root.
    2. Incorrect selection of propagation material - cuttings are too old.
  • The shoots did not take root, but rotted away. In this case, the used soil has been contaminated with fungi or bacteria.

To prevent an unfavorable outcome, the soil must first be disinfected with steam.

  • The appearance of mold. Without daily airing of the mini-greenhouse, condensation will begin to accumulate under the film or can, which provokes the appearance of mold.

It is possible to stimulate the formation of roots with the help of vitamin watering: once a week, the plant should be sprayed with water with the addition of "Zircon" (2 drops per 200 ml of water).

How to care for a indoor flower: first care

Immediately after rooting, young azaleas should not be transplanted - a sharp change in climate can adversely affect the state of the plant. First, you need to create an adaptation period for the plant - leave them open for a couple of hours within 7-10 days.

The first pots should be about 7 cm in diameter. To create a drainage effect, the bottom of the pot must be filled with expanded clay. The soil remains the same as it was during rooting.

After a couple of months, in young plants, the upper shoots should be pinched for the appearance of lateral shoots, which contributes to the formation of a branched bush. The first buds that appear on the new plant must be cut off. This is due to the fact that the azalea is still not strong enough for simultaneous flowering and growth.

Azalea is a poisonous plant: all parts of it contain a poison - the glycoside andromedotoxin. For any contact with the azalea, use gloves to protect the skin from the sap.

Further care for the propagated plant is no different from the standard care for an azalea:

  • The air temperature should be between 15-17 degrees in winter and 20-22 degrees in summer.
  • Watering the plant regularly with soft water at room temperature.
  • Maintaining a humid microclimate using frequent spraying or using special air humidifiers.

You should not wait for flowering from a young azalea - a new plant will bloom in 2-3 years.

Despite the complex and lengthy process of reproduction of azaleas, its beauty covers all the time and labor costs. Proper reproduction and proper care is the key to a healthy life and long flowering of your room beauty.
