Azalea is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub. Indoor azalea is an unusually beautiful plant that blooms profusely with white, bright pink, pale pink flowers, similar to a rose.

Like all plants, azalea is susceptible to various diseases and the appearance of harmful insects and fungi on it. The article discusses plant diseases and pests, as well as methods of treatment and getting rid of them, and preventive measures.

Common indoor flower diseases

  1. Desiccation - arises for many reasons, in particular, due to incorrect temperature conditions, incorrectly selected substrate, lack of timely fertilizing and insufficient lighting, direct sunlight on the plant or various diseases of the root system. When dry, it is worth taking a closer look at the plant to determine its causes.

Attention! If, when examining the azalea, you did not see living buds, then the plant will no longer be able to reanimate.

  2. Yellowing of the leaves. There may also be several reasons:
    • The development of chlorosis. In this case, the water for irrigation must be acidified (with citric acid or other acids).
    • Damage by the shield. To get rid of it, you need to treat the leaves with soapy water or chemicals.
  3. Blackening of the leaves can occur as a result of being hit by black thrips. The pest lives on the inside of the leaf plate, where black or grayish spots are formed. In such cases, the azalea must be treated with chemicals.
  4. Shedding. If the leaves fall off in winter, then in this case we are talking about the dormant period of the plant after flowering. If the leaves fall off despite the fact that the plant has not yet bloomed, then this indicates improper care of the flower.
  5. Brown and brown spots on the leaves. The reason is inappropriate conditions of detention.
  6. Brown spots on the leaves - the reason is waterlogging of the soil.

Why azalea leaves grow very light and undergo other changes is described here.

Azalea is very demanding on temperature and many problems in growing arise due to the high temperatures of its content. The optimum temperature for an azalea is 17 degrees Celsius.

  7. Buds fall due to dry soil, high temperature or dry air.
  8. If moss has formed in the pot - this indicates excessive moisture, which is a favorable environment for different types of rot.

How to determine the cause of rhododendron disease?

If you notice a deterioration in the condition of a houseplant, then you should carefully consider it. If pests are found, it is, of course, worth fighting with them. In other cases, it is necessary to revise agrotechnical care and study the symptoms of the disease. After that, it will be clear what the plant is infected with.

What is the danger for the plant?

Any disease threatens azaleas with gradual death, if treatment is not started on time. The sooner you start to reanimate the plant, the more chances you have to save it.

Fungal diseases - their description, photos, treatment

The characteristic signs of a fungus disease are the appearance of spots, plaque, putrefactive lesions.

With such a disease, the fungus penetrates the vessels of the plant, interfering with the movement of nutrients. As a result, the leaves wither, turn brown and fall off. A pink bloom appears on the root collar.

Attention! The plant must be isolated and treated with a 0.2% Fundazole solution.

Against the development of this disease, you can use a solution of nettle (2 - 2.5 kg) and celandine, diluted in a ratio of 1: 5.

Brown spots with a dark border appear on the leaves. The middle dries and crumbles. The affected parts of the plant must be removed and, in turn, treated (sprayed) all plants with Topsin-M or Fundazol.

The formation of brown spots with a red border, the top of the leaf is covered with a gray bloom. For the treatment of azalea, they are treated alternately with the preparations Fundazol and Ditan M - 45.

Tracheomycosis (vascular wilting)

Signs of the disease: rapid drying of the foliage and stalks of the azalea, the appearance of a gray bloom on the leaves. This disease leads to rotting of the rhizome and severe damage to the vascular system of the plant.

When signs of this disease appear, it is necessary to cut off and burn the affected areas, and then spray the plant with Bordeaux liquid.

The appearance of brown spots of various shapes. In this case, the plants are treated with Bordeaux liquid.

To prepare Bordeaux liquid, you need to take copper sulfate and quicklime:

  1. Pour copper powder with hot water and add cold water. The total volume should be 5 liters.
  2. Take a 10 liter container (the container should not be iron, galvanized or aluminum, it is better to take glass or plastic) and fill it halfway with water.
  3. Dissolve lime in water.
  4. Then add the dissolved copper sulfate there and mix.

Attention! To get 1% liquid per 10 liters, you need to take 150 grams of lime (it is better if it is fresher) and 100 grams of copper sulfate.

For 3% liquid per 10 liters, 400 g of lime and 300 g of copper sulfate are required.

If there is too little lime, the mixture can burn the leaves, therefore, you need to monitor the correct consistency of the solution.

Step-by-step instructions for parasite control measures

Below we will talk about harmful insects that infect rhododendron, show their photos and describe how to deal with parasites.

The rhododendron bug is a winged insect up to 3.5 mm in size. It is one of the main pests of azaleas. The insect lays eggs on the back of the leaves. The pest reproduces in dry weather under the influence of the sun. The larvae suck out the sap of the plant.

Important! The leaves affected by the bug curl, turn yellow and dry out. The insect affects species and varieties of azaleas, in which the underside of the leaf is not pubescent.

Treatment: in case of defeat by a rhododendron bug, azalea is sprayed with the preparations Decis, Fury. Spray twice at intervals of 5 - 7 days.

The body of the pest is covered with a white waxy coating. It affects the leaves, flowers, shoots of the plant. The affected areas are bent, dry and eventually the azalea dies (read here how to reanimate an azalea if it has dried up, and find out whether a dying azalea can always be saved here).

Attention! The mealybug sucks out cell sap from the plant and is the cause of the appearance of sooty fungi.

Treatment. It is difficult to remove such a parasite, but it is possible to cope with a mild defeat.

It is necessary to carefully clean the plants from worms and their secretions, using a cotton swab or a soft brush dipped in soapy water. Then you need to spray with an infusion of garlic. It is necessary to spray at least three times with an interval of 7 - 10 days.

You can also use drugs Nurell D, Fozalon or Actellic at weekly intervals.

The larvae of this beetle gnaw at the roots of plants, causing them to wilt. In spring, beetles eat leaves, reducing the decorative effect of the flower.

Treatment. In spring and summer, during the feeding period of beetles, the plant must be sprayed with Phosbecid or Aktellik. To prevent the development of weevil larvae, bazudin or diazinon is introduced into the soil.

Such a parasite severely damages the plant: it eats holes in the leaves, leaving only his veins. It damages both the roots and stems of the azalea.

Treatment. To destroy such a pest, diazinon is used.

Damages rhododendron foliage by making large holes in it. This pest feeds mainly at night.

Important! It is dangerous in that it can destroy plants (especially young ones) in a short time.

Treatment. First, you need to collect adults, and then treat the azalea with a 0.8% solution of TMTD (tetramethylthiuram disulfide), which can be purchased at the store. In addition to such a solution, you can use another, consisting of one part of bleach and four parts of furnace ash.

These insects eat the foliage and flowering of the azalea. Leaves and buds, as a result of their activity, wither, turn pale and die, the development of plants slows down.

Treatment. To combat such a pest, a nicotine solution is used. Also sprayed with metaphosis dust or Phosphamide emulsion: 2 g per 1 liter of water.

The specimen is a caterpillar of an azalea moth. She feeds on the leaves of the flower. It pupates on them.

Treatment. Sulfur can be used to combat azalea moths. It is fumigated and sprayed on the plant.

Rhododendron fly

This insect feeds on liquid from the plant's leaf plates. As a result, small light spots appear on the upper side of the leaves. In the middle of summer, adults develop and lay eggs.

Treatment. Treatments (spraying) with nicotine sulfate are quite effective against flies.

It parasitizes the plant in large colonies. It helps to curl leaves, slow down the growth of azaleas and hold back flowering. The flower buds do not open, the plant loses its appearance.

Attention! Aphids are also a carrier of viral diseases.

Treatment. For the treatment of azaleas from aphids, use a solution of Karbofos (0.3%) or Actellik (0.1%). The main thing is to start treatment as early as possible, immediately after the detection of the pest.

The larvae of this beetle develop on the plant, feeding on its juice and thereby damaging the azalea. Adult beetles target wood, gnawing into it and feeding on some of the substances in it.

Treatment. It is difficult to deal with the grinder, it is much easier to prevent its appearance in your house. To do this, you need to carry out wet cleaning in a timely manner and ventilate the rooms. To destroy these beetles, various aerosols, liquid paraffin or a mixture of turpentine and kerosene (3: 1) are used.

Spider mite

A well-known pest of azaleas and many other plants. It is so small (0.5 mm) that it is almost impossible to see it.

Reference! A tick is diagnosed by the web, which it weaves on the leaf plates of the plant. The affected leaves are rolled into a tube.

The mite sucks out all the juices from their plants.

Treatment is carried out with the drugs Agravertin or Diazinon, according to the dosage indicated on the package.

Prevention and care at home

Often the causes of various diseases and ailments of azalea is improper care of it. It is very important to observe the temperature regime, timely watering and spraying, it is necessary to do top dressing with organic fertilizers.

Treatment with Fundazol also belongs to preventive measures. The drug has a long-term effect (up to 25 days). It protects the plant from new fungi and heals the early stages of disease.

Important! Organic fertilizers and nitrogen improve defense mechanisms that fight most diseases. The more minerals you give azaleas, the stronger will be its immunity to various diseases.

Azalea is susceptible to many diseases and damage from insect pests. Proper care is very important for this flower, because it is quite demanding. When buying such a flower, you need to pay attention to whether there are dry leaves on it, which may indicate the presence of some kind of disease.

If you want your plant to be healthy and bloom profusely, do not forget to carry out disease prevention and periodic feeding. Then the azalea will delight you with its splendor and beautiful flowers.
